Romania, Absent in Munich: Ignored or Unprepared?

Context of the Munich Security Conference

The Munich Security Conference (MSC) is one of the most prestigious international forums in the fields of security and foreign policy, held annually in the Bavarian capital. Founded in 1963, MSC brings together heads of state and government, diplomats, security experts, NATO, UN representatives, and private sector members to discuss global security challenges.

In recent years, the topics addressed have included collective defense within NATO, regional conflict management, the future of European security architecture, and relations with major global powers. In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the recent MSC edition was dominated by discussions about the future of the war, possible ceasefire scenarios, and the geopolitical impact on Eastern Europe.

In such a setting, Romania’s absence from the discussion table not only raises questions but also reflects a deep issue regarding the country’s strategic and diplomatic positioning.

Regional Economic Forum Moldova: A Platform for Strengthening Romania’s Role

The Regional Economic Forum Moldova is an annual event held in Vatra Dornei, dedicated to promoting economic development and strengthening regional cooperation. It brings together decision-makers, economic experts, business representatives, and public institutions to discuss and propose solutions for the region’s sustainable development.

The 2024 edition had extensive participation, with delegations from Moldova and Ukraine being strongly represented. Additionally, representatives from Poland and the Western Balkans were present, further strengthening the international dimension of the forum and creating new opportunities for regional collaboration.

To actively contribute to defining the future regional policy of Eastern Europe, at the XIXth edition of the Regional Economic Forum Moldova 2025 in Vatra Dornei, a series of strategic themes will be adopted to strengthen Romania’s position in international decision-making processes. Through these initiatives, Romania must take on a more visible and influential role in shaping the regional future.

Ion ȘTEFANOVICI, President of CAPDR: “The Regional Economic Forum Moldova 2025 must become a catalyst for Romania’s strategic initiatives in Eastern Europe. We need a clear vision and a firm commitment to ensure that Romania is no longer just a spectator but an active player in the future security and regional economic development architecture.”
