Dr. Paraschiva POSTOLACHE (Iași Clinical Recovery Hospital) at FERM 2025: “Only through collaboration and integration can we ensure a sustainable and patient-centered healthcare system”

MOLDOVA REGIONAL ECONOMIC FORUM 2025

19th Edition – Vatra Dornei, July 9–13, 2025

Thematic Panel:

Health and Medical Services in the Moldova Region

Speaker:

Dr. Paraschiva Postolache – Iași Clinical Recovery Hospital

Topic of Intervention:
“Spirocco Digital Hospital – Integrated Telemedicine for a More Efficient, Equitable, and Fully Digitized Healthcare System, Paraschiva Postolache, Martin Bikfalvi”

Prof. Univ. Dr. Paraschiva Postolache, a renowned expert in rehabilitative medicine and representative of Iași Clinical Recovery Hospital, presented one of the most relevant digital initiatives in the medical field: Spirocco Digital Hospital. With a firm voice and articulated vision, Dr. Postolache advocated for transforming the Romanian healthcare system through digitalization, equity, and both human and technological connectivity.

Four Decades of Leadership in Respiratory Rehabilitation and Medical Innovation

With a career spanning nearly four decades dedicated to rehabilitation medicine, Dr. Paraschiva Postolache is today one of the most respected voices in the field of respiratory rehabilitation in Romania. Recognized nationally and internationally, she highlighted at the Moldova Regional Economic Forum the need for structural reform of the healthcare system, especially in the Moldova region — an area where infrastructural challenges and unequal access to medical services persist.

“It has been nearly 40 years since I have been trying to develop respiratory rehabilitation in Iași and Romania. Although many of the things created were destroyed, I remain undeterred.”

Respiratory rehabilitation is not a luxury, but an essential component of medical care, with direct benefits on patients’ quality of life, lowering costs for the healthcare system, and extending life expectancy. Dr. Postolache promotes a multidisciplinary and integrative approach, where the patient is supported not only by doctors but also by physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists, bioengineers, and social workers.

This patient-centered vision supported by complementary teams represents, in her opinion, the key to building a resilient, equitable, and efficient healthcare system, capable of addressing the demographic, social, and epidemiological challenges of the 21st century.

From Health Crisis to Digital Innovation: The Context Behind the Spirocco Project

In her intervention, Dr. Paraschiva Postolache emphasized the role of the COVID-19 pandemic as a key trigger for digital transformation in the Romanian healthcare system. The health crisis demanded rapid adaptations and exposed the limits of traditional access to medical services, especially in disadvantaged or geographically isolated communities. In this context, the idea of developing a digital hospital such as Spirocco gained strategic relevance.

“It forced us to develop systems for connecting with patients. Digital systems allow us to work efficiently remotely, with patients who otherwise would have no access to treatment.”

Thus, the Spirocco Digital Hospital project emerged as an innovative and necessary response, leveraging the potential of telemedicine to ensure continuity of medical care and equity in treatment access. Through technology, Spirocco proposes a sustainable model capable of overcoming logistical barriers and providing personalized, real-time interventions regardless of the patient’s location.

Spirocco Digital Hospital – The Integrated Technological Solution for Equitable and Efficient Healthcare

Developed in partnership with Martin Bikfalvi (GreenSplit), the Spirocco Digital Hospital project is described by Dr. Paraschiva Postolache as a “technological jewel”: a portable, compact, and intelligent system that integrates multiple interconnected medical devices designed to be accessible, efficient, and easy to use.

The Spirocco device represents a cutting-edge innovation in telemedicine and remote medical rehabilitation, offering a full range of essential functionalities for modern care:

  • Remote monitoring of chronic patients in real-time;
  • Multidisciplinary teleconsultations facilitated through secure platforms;
  • Integrated clinical and paraclinical analyses with automatic result transmission;
  • Permanent interconnection between the patient and medical team via intelligent, customizable software;
  • Automated digital triage and electronic medical records, accessible in the cloud for all involved specialists.

“The devices are small, easy to use, connected through software to the medical coordinator. The report is generated automatically, and the patient receives prompt and personalized care.” explained Dr. Postolache.

Through this system, patients benefit from quality medical care without needing to travel, while medical teams can efficiently manage resources by intervening quickly and targeted. Spirocco thus becomes a bridge between traditional medicine and the digital health of the future, adapted to the concrete needs of the population in the Moldova Region and across the country.

Respiratory Rehabilitation and Digitalization – An Indispensable Tandem for Modern Medicine

In her intervention, Dr. Paraschiva Postolache emphasized the complementary and essential nature of integrating respiratory rehabilitation with digital technologies, highlighting multiple benefits on patients’ quality of life, treatment costs, and healthcare system efficiency.

“Respiratory rehabilitation trains the entire musculature and changes the patient’s lifestyle. Combined with digitalization, it produces huge savings for patients, families, and the public system.”

Applied both preoperatively and postoperatively, as well as in chronic respiratory or neurological diseases, respiratory rehabilitation increases patient autonomy, significantly reduces hospitalization duration, and contributes to rapid reintegration into social and professional life.

Dr. Postolache provided convincing examples: patients who, lacking access to digitalization, are forced to make great efforts to reach specialized centers, with associated risks and costs. In contrast, by using the Spirocco system, these patients can be monitored at home, connected in real-time with the medical team, and supported in a personalized, safe, and efficient environment.

This fusion of active rehabilitation and smart technology emerges as one of the most promising directions for reforming the Romanian healthcare system, especially in regions with deficient access to specialized care.

A Scalable Model with Regional and International Impact

In her presentation, Dr. Postolache advocated for expanding this innovative model cross-border, especially to the Republic of Moldova, where she has taught courses and contributed to initiating similar respiratory rehabilitation programs. She also highlighted involvement in European networks through COST projects, aimed at promoting the exchange of best practices and international collaboration.

“I have given courses in Chișinău with over 500 participants. Professors there have asked for my support in developing a respiratory rehabilitation system similar to the one implemented in Romania. We believe we have a common responsibility to support each other and learn from one another.”

This vision confirms the potential of the Spirocco model and the integrated digital respiratory rehabilitation approach as a scalable solution capable of generating significant positive impact throughout the Moldova region and beyond its borders.

Conclusions:

In conclusion, Dr. Postolache emphasized the necessity of close institutional and interdisciplinary collaboration among specialists, authorities, and communities for sustainable development and strengthening of the healthcare system. Only through efficient synergies and overcoming individual interests can resources be optimized, current challenges adequately addressed, and a functional, resilient, and patient-centered model be built capable of providing quality and accessible medical services in the long term.
