Tourism and Destination Development in the Moldova Region

Speaker:

Topic of the speech:
“Integrating Historical Heritage and Natural Resources into the Tourism Development Strategy of the Bugeac Area and Feștelița Commune”

During Panel 7 – Tourism and Destination Development in the Moldova Region, the mayor of Feștelița Commune, Republic of Moldova, Nicolae Tudoreanu, presented a comprehensive vision of the tourism potential of the area he represents – Bugeac in the Republic of Moldova – combining historical memory, traditions, and natural landscapes into a local development strategy.

Bugeac – A Geography with Historical Memory

At the beginning of his speech, Nicolae Tudoreanu highlighted the historical connections between Feștelița and the entire Bugeac region, emphasizing the cultural and identity ties that cross current borders.

“I represent the geographical area of Bugeac. When we talk about Bugeac, we must refer historically to what was once the county and Cetatea Albă, only then can we understand the heritage value of this region, which remains rather understudied.”

The mayor stressed the concept of “Tourism of Military Glory Memory”, taking into account the local historical heritage and the sacrifices of Romanian soldiers in the area. Feștelița has a record of over 700 Romanian soldiers who fell in the summer of 1944, and Nicolae Tudoreanu called for their memory to be honored through cultural and religious activities integrated into the tourism offer.

Tourism with Identity: From Gastronomy to Cultural and Memorial

The mayor proposed a diversified approach to local tourism, combining:

  • Gastronomic tourism – by promoting culinary traditions and local products.
  • Sports and leisure tourism – through the development of areas for extreme sports and outdoor activities.
  • Cultural tourism – through festivals and artistic events.
  • Memorial tourism – through commemorations, memorial services, and themed routes dedicated to heroes.

“We do not remove the Romanian interest from context when we speak about that fall. (…) The bones of our heroes are not mere bones. They are relics that stand watch and try to make us stronger in achieving a noble purpose.”

Feștelița – A Story Between Nature and Legend

Nicolae Tudoreanu described Feștelița Commune as a place where “history intertwines with nature,” a village that preserves in every stone and hill the traces of its ancestors.

“Across the vast hills of time stretches Feștelița, a soulful village that keeps the story of its ancestors in every stone. In the house-museum, today’s children discover the treasure of the past.”

Local heritage elements – the fountain of the Leul Tulumari dynasty, old vineyards with rare grape varieties such as cudric, taras, and țepoi, wetlands, and thickets with a unique microclimate – are seen as untapped tourism resources with immense potential.

The Thickets of Feștelița – Future Leisure Destination

The mayor presented for the first time a proposal for developing the thickets at the foot of the plateau – an area of approximately 30 hectares with intact ecosystems and spectacular landscapes.

“Summers are very cool and winters are mild. It can be utilized for establishing a tourist area for leisure, extreme sports, and outdoor cultural activities.”

The plans include marked tourist trails, rest areas, recreational spaces for all ages, and integrating the area into regional circuits linking Moldova on both sides of the Prut River.

A Vision for Integrated Tourism in Moldova

The central message of Nicolae Tudoreanu’s speech was that rural tourism development cannot be achieved in isolation, but through cross-border collaboration and connecting destinations in Romania, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine into a joint offer.

“A tourist visiting Bucovina could also pass through Bessarabia if we offer integrated thematic routes. This is the real potential of extended Moldova.”

Conclusion

Mayor Nicolae Tudoreanu’s intervention highlighted how a rural community can shape its future through a coherent vision based on leveraging historical heritage, protecting the environment, and diversifying the tourism offer.

Feștelița Commune, with its spectacular landscapes, stories and traditions passed down through generations, and the living memory of its heroes, becomes an example of a locality that combines economic development with respect for cultural identity.

Through regional cooperation initiatives, leisure projects, and integrated promotion strategies, this area has the potential to become a competitive tourist destination connected to international circuits, without losing its authenticity.
