Gheorghe ȘOLDAN, President of the Suceava County Council, in the context of FERM 2025: “Accession to the European Union is the simplest step for the development of the Republic of Moldova”

Present at the Moldova Regional Economic Forum 2025 (FERM), held from July 9 to 13 in Vatra Dornei, Gheorghe Șoldan, President of the Suceava County Council, emphasized in an interview the importance of materializing the relations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, advocating for a transition from diplomatic speeches to tangible actions.

In a context marked by geopolitical challenges but also by opportunities for regional cooperation, Șoldan noted that Romania has been and remains an active and generous partner for the Republic of Moldova, constantly engaging through direct support and investments, especially in recent years.

“So, on a declarative level, we always say nicely, diplomatically, that we can, we can, we can… but in practice, things are somewhat less,” said the President of the Suceava County Council, adding that “at the moment there are clear investments by the Romanian state, and I believe we can move from words to deeds.”

This transition, Gheorghe Șoldan argues, is no longer just a desideratum but an urgent necessity in a context where cross-border cooperation is becoming increasingly strategic. The support provided by Romania to the Republic of Moldova, especially during the critical period caused by the conflict in Ukraine, is a conclusive example.

The supply of energy and investments channeled through Romanian funds represent evidence of a mature partnership, which can no longer be sustained merely through rhetoric but through joint construction.

“The Republic of Moldova has a real chance to join the EU by 2030”

Referring to the European path of the Republic of Moldova, Gheorghe Șoldan expressed optimism, stating that accession to the European Union by 2030 is not only possible but probable, provided that the current political direction is maintained.

“The Republic of Moldova has a very high chance to join the European Union by 2030. It depends greatly on the government of the Republic of Moldova, as it depends greatly on the President, Maia Sandu.”

He recalled that, through the outcome of the latest elections, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova have clearly conveyed a pro-European orientation, thus consolidating the political foundation necessary for such an endeavor.

More than just a geopolitical perspective, Șoldan suggests that European integration could become a catalyst for a possible reunification with Romania, within a natural framework of shared values and European institutions.

“For the development of the Republic of Moldova and, perhaps, a union with Romania, with our brothers, I believe that joining the European Union is the simplest step that can be taken,” he stated, with a tone that combined conviction and hope.

Conclusion

The conclusion of Gheorghe Șoldan‘s intervention at FERM 2025 clearly emphasizes that the relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova can no longer remain at the level of promises and symbolic declarations. Moving to concrete actions, visible investments, and durable partnerships is essential for the region’s progress. Romania has already demonstrated, through the support provided to the Republic of Moldova in critical moments, that it can be a pillar of stability and development.

At the same time, his message conveys a note of confidence regarding the European future of the Republic of Moldova. Accession to the European Union, projected for 2030, is seen not merely as a political aspiration but as a logical step in the modernization process and rapprochement with Romania. The forum thus becomes not only a platform for dialogue but also a catalyst for action that can transform commitments into tangible realities.
