A Tradition Continued for Over 70 Years

This initiative is organized by the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți, together with the Romanian Orthodox Church Fund of Bukovina, as part of the museum project “Cazinoul Băilor” in Vatra Dornei. The exhibition represents a fulfillment of the efforts of Mrs. Professor Lucreția Hariuc, who for over 70 years has contributed to the perpetuation and development of the tradition of painting eggs in Bukovina.

Born in 1939 in the commune of Vama, Lucreția Hariuc learned the art of painting eggs from her family. After graduating from the Pedagogical High School for Girls in Gura Humorului, she married and moved to the commune of Vatra Moldoviței, where she worked as a teacher and director of the Cultural House. “As the fame of the painted eggs made by my students crossed the country’s borders, I commuted to Suceava to introduce the art of painting eggs to the students of the Popular Art School”, shared Mrs. Hariuc.

A Fruitful Collaboration

After retiring, Lucreția Hariuc continued her teaching activities at the Special School in Câmpulung Moldovenesc. In 2003, the young priest Gabriel Herea was appointed to the same school, teaching Orthodox religion. A friendship based on a passion for hermeneutics and a desire to transmit ancestral knowledge developed between the two.

Thus, the collection of painted eggs we present today for the first time at the ‘Cazinoul Băilor’ Museum Center in Vatra Dornei came to be,” continued Father Herea. This collection is the result of the work and dedication of both, serving as a testament to the cultural and traditional values of Bukovina.

A Call for the Perpetuation of Tradition

The exhibition serves as a public call to popular artists who paint eggs in Bukovina, inviting them to get involved in perpetuating this ancient art. “We invite folk artists to propose author projects to be included in the exhibition program of the ‘Cazinoul Băilor’ Museum Center in Vatra Dornei.” The exhibition can be visited from July to October 2024, from Wednesday to Friday, between 12 PM and 4 PM. For organized group visits outside the schedule, appointments can be made,” added the curator.

Conclusion

The exhibition “Traditional Symbols Written on Painted Eggs from Bukovina” represents a unique opportunity to discover and appreciate the traditional art of egg painting. Through this initiative, Father Gabriel Herea and Mrs. Lucreția Hariuc hope to inspire new generations to continue this valuable tradition, keeping the cultural heritage of Bukovina alive.
