TOPIC: The Opening of the Exhibition “Famous Opera Singers in Europe in the Second Half of the 19th Century”
Father Bogdan Țarcă, director of the “Băilor Casino” Museum Center in Vatra Dornei, began his message at the “Moldova Regional Economic Forum 2024” by introducing the exhibition “Journey into the World of Past Music – Cultural Artifacts from Cornel Rusan’s Collection“. This exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți and the Orthodox Church Fund of Bukovina, will be open from July 2024 to January 2025, offering a fascinating journey into the musical past of the 20th century.
A Musical Journey Through Time
“Our exhibition presents an exceptional selection of musical artifacts that illustrate the evolution of music over the decades,” stated Father Bogdan Țarcă. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to admire “photographs of famous opera singers from the second half of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century”, including images of legendary figures such as Pauline Viardot Garcia and Enrico Caruso. These photographs not only document the history of opera music but also evoke the atmosphere and elegance of the era.
Valuable Exhibits and Rarities
The exhibition also includes “two street organ (barrel organ) discs from the last decade of the 19th century, which represent an important part of the musical heritage of that time,” mentioned Father Bogdan Țarcă. These historical instruments are a rarity and offer a unique perspective on how music was disseminated before the invention of the gramophone.
Several gramophone records from the period 1911-1946 complement the exhibition, covering a wide range of musical genres. These include classical music, opera, jazz, and Romanian folk music, featuring works by renowned artists such as Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. „Three rare records with two Romanian opera singers, tenor Traian Grozăvescu and bass Victor Madincea, are also included and are particularly valuable to music lovers”, added the director of the “Băilor Casino” Museum Center in Vatra Dornei.
Another remarkable item in the exhibition is “a portable ‘His Master’s Voice’ gramophone from 1930”. This exhibit symbolizes the golden age of the gramophone and offers an authentic experience of how music was listened to in the past.
