Through her presentation, Mihaela Cocîrță, Executive Director of the Destination Management Organization (OMD) Țara Dornelor, highlighted the importance of sustainable development and local collaboration for advancing the region at the “Regional Economic Forum Moldova 2024.” “Țara Dornelor has exceptional development potential, and OMD represents a crucial step in harnessing this through multiple projects and integrating innovative solutions”, stated Mihaela Cocîrță.
OMD Țara Dornelor: an essential public-private partnership
The Destination Management Organization Țara Dornelor was established in 2023 as a public-private partnership with public utility status, aimed at collaborating with local administrations and economic agents in the area to develop and promote the region. “Building a destination management organization is not an easy process”, explained Mihaela Cocîrță, “but international models demonstrate the necessity of such a structure to ensure sustainable and coordinated development of the destination.”
Consultation and development strategy
To create a relevant organization that meets community needs and aligns with current tourism trends, “representatives from local administrations, economic agents in the HoReCa sector, qualified personnel in tourism, as well as relevant institutions” were consulted, explained the executive director of OMD. The research conducted highlighted that responsible tourism is not only an economic opportunity but also a catalyst for the growth and development of the local community.
Vision for a sustainable destination
At the core of the development strategy for the Țara Dornelor destination lies a clear vision: “developing a destination for authentic experiences, aimed at responsible tourists, where local heritage is protected and development is based on sustainable principles and efficient resource management”, stated Mihaela Cocîrță. The main objective of OMD is to create a favorable environment for the development of the local community, while also ensuring the resilience of the destination and promoting a circular economy.
Pillars of sustainable development
Among the essential pillars of sustainable development within OMD are “inter-institutional and public-private collaboration, development of tourist infrastructure, organization of territorial space, protection of local heritage, education and awareness, as well as promotion through marketing and communication.”
These elements are crucial for ensuring a positive impact on the region and aligning with international standards of responsible tourism.
