“Promoting sustainable tourism and leveraging natural heritage as a driver of regional development”
This year’s edition of the Regional Economic Forum Moldova (FERM), held in Vatra Dornei, included a series of thematic field visits, designed to give participants the opportunity to discover concrete examples of best practices in regional development and sustainable tourism.
Among these, a special highlight was the visit to the Călimani Visitor Center, a landmark space for promoting natural heritage and ecological tourism.
Călimani Visitor Center – a model of ecological education and sustainable tourism
Participants in this year’s edition had the chance to explore the Călimani Visitor Center, an integral part of the Călimani National Park. Located in an area with remarkable biodiversity and a unique geological history, the center offers visitors interactive information about local ecosystems, protected fauna and flora, as well as the traditional activities of the communities surrounding the mountain.
The visit was appreciated not only for its informative value, but also for its inspirational character. Representatives of the business community and local administration emphasized the importance of such projects for the development of responsible tourism and for strengthening Moldova’s image as an economically and culturally attractive region.
Dialogue between nature and economic development
The experience at Călimani highlighted how environmental protection and regional development can go hand in hand. Visitors had the chance to talk with biodiversity conservation specialists and learn how the natural potential of the area can be harnessed through sustainable tourism projects, without disturbing ecological balance.
For investors, such examples serve as reference points in shaping future projects that combine economic profitability with social and environmental responsibility. Moreover, for local administrations, the Călimani experience can be a model to replicate in other regions, through initiatives that promote natural and cultural heritage.
Conclusion
The visit to the Călimani Visitor Center was more than just an excursion – it was an exercise in awareness and inspiration for participants at the Regional Economic Forum Moldova. In a context where economic development must be accompanied by care for the environment and the community, the Călimani experience showed that sustainable development is not just an ideal, but an achievable reality when there is will, vision, and collaboration.
Thus, the 2025 edition of the Forum reconfirmed that Moldova has not only economic and human resources, but also natural ones, which, if intelligently leveraged, can contribute to transforming the region into a hub of attractiveness and innovation.
