“The Role of the Private Health Sector as a Real Support for Communities, Doctors, and Equitable Access to Modern Investigations”

Tatiana Ciuntu, General Director of Dorna Medical, highlighted during Panel 6 – Health and Medical Services the importance of developing the private health sector as a direct response to the needs of small communities, patients, and healthcare professionals.

In a clear and grounded speech based on the realities of the medical system in the Moldova region, Tatiana Ciuntu explained how the expansion of Dorna Medical services was not driven by competition, but by the urgent need for access to modern investigations, especially in isolated or underfunded areas.

From “Medical Tourism” to Quality Local Services

Over 15 years ago, access to modern imaging investigations – such as computed tomography – was drastically limited in the region. This situation generated a genuine “internal medical tourism”, where patients from the counties of Botoșani, Suceava, or Vatra Dornei had to travel hundreds of kilometers to reach university centers such as Cluj or Târgu Mureș.

“I know there was a kind of medical tourism, so to speak – buses used to run from Botoșani to Cluj or Târgu Mureș. For CT investigations, patients from the Botoșani, Suceava, Vatra Dornei area had to travel to these university centers, because Suceava County Hospital was the only one that had this investigation.”

In this context, the intervention of the private sector became essential for relieving the public system, but also for democratizing access to advanced technologies in peripheral areas.

Medical Imaging, a Turning Point

A key moment in the development of Dorna Medical was the opening, in 2014, of the first medical imaging center in Vatra Dornei – a major step for that geographic area. This investment generated a positive ripple effect, not only for patients, but also for doctors, who benefited from support and continuous training in new imaging technologies.

“We had our first imaging center in 2014, opened in Vatra Dornei, and from then until now, annually, we organize medical conferences and symposia with family doctors, specialists, and resident doctors.”

Besides technical equipment, Dorna Medical has also invested in continuous medical education, organizing scientific events dedicated to therapeutic protocols and emerging technologies. Constant dialogue with family doctors and specialists from both public and private systems ensures rapid adaptation to real needs in the field.

“Everything we do in the private sector is a support for the community, for doctors, and for everyone else.”

Adaptability and Partnerships for Quality

Another important aspect highlighted by Tatiana Ciuntu was the flexibility with which the private sector can respond to the changing demands of modern medicine. CT and MRI scanning protocols are continuously updated according to doctors’ requirements and the evolution of clinical cases.

“Any scanning protocol we have, we adapt according to doctors’ requirements and to the diagnoses that patients bring.”

This adaptability, often lacking in the public system trapped in bureaucracy, is an example of best practices in integrating technology, professional training, and patient responsibility within a sustainable framework.

Conclusion

Through her intervention at FERM 2025, Tatiana Ciuntu demonstrated that the private sector is not a competitor to the public system, but a strategic partner in meeting the real needs of communities in the Moldova region. Initiatives like those of Dorna Medical become models of best practice, showing that investing in health is not only about high-performance equipment, but also about medical education, inter-institutional collaboration, and, above all, empathy towards the patient.
