Thursday, September 11, 2025 – At the Palace of the Republic in Chișinău, the launch conference of the project “Transfer of Best Practices and Strengthening Administrative Capacity in Regional Development Policy between Romania and the Republic of Moldova” took place, financed through the Interreg NEXT Romania – Republic of Moldova Program.
The event, organized in partnership between the Center for Analysis and Planning of Regional Development (CAPDR) and the Regional Development Agency of Chișinău Municipality (ADR Chișinău), brought together representatives of public administration, regional development experts, and decision-makers from both countries.
Speaker:
Iurie TĂNASE – Vice President of the Soroca District Council; Republic of Moldova
Soroca, a Leader in Attracting European Funds
At the beginning of his speech, Iurie Tănase conveyed greetings on behalf of the President of the District, Veaceslav Rusnac, and the Soroca District Council, underlining the contribution of the community he represents.
“Soroca, both the municipality and the District Council, are among the leaders in attracting European funds in the Republic of Moldova.”
He recalled that one of the greatest achievements was the cross-border project “Stephen the Great: Shared History, Shared Heritage Vaslui – Soroca”, worth 1.6 million euros, which focused on the restoration and promotion of Soroca Fortress.
Soroca Fortress – A Symbol of Shared History
The Vice President of the District Council emphasized the historical and cultural importance of Stephen the Great’s Fortress, which he described as “our shared jewel.”
“I would like to invite those of you who haven’t visited Soroca Fortress to do so at least once. It is a citadel full of history. Every time I enter the fortress, I think of one thing: if it had a voice, it would tell us so much.”
Currently, the Soroca District Council is implementing an innovative project, in collaboration with the Iași County Council, which involves the installation of an interactive hologram through which the figure of Stephen the Great will “tell” visitors about the fortress’s past. The project has a budget of 12,000 euros and is in the implementation phase.
Ongoing Cross-Border Projects
Another example of cooperation mentioned by Iurie Tănase during the conference was the project “Bridge over the Prut, Skilled Personnel for Better Times”.
This initiative is carried out in partnership between the Soroca District Council and four other districts in the Republic of Moldova, with the support of the Sibiu County Council. The project aims to develop human capital and strengthen institutional cooperation between the two countries.
Romania and the Republic of Moldova – Ties of Kinship
In conclusion, the Vice President of the Soroca District Council emphasized the symbolic and historical dimension of the relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
“Relations between the Republic of Moldova and Romania are at a high level and developing very rapidly. And this is thanks to the fact that we are not strangers, we have a bond of kinship. A bond of blood – and blood never turns into water.”
He also expressed gratitude to the Embassy of Romania and Romanian representatives for the constant support offered to the Republic of Moldova and to the community of Soroca.
Conclusion
The speech of Iurie Tănase clearly showed that Soroca not only benefits from European funds but also manages to turn them into concrete projects with impact on the community and historical heritage. Stephen the Great’s Fortress has become a symbol of these efforts, being brought back to life through cross-border investments and innovative projects, such as the hologram that will revive history for visitors.
Furthermore, the projects under implementation, such as “Bridge over the Prut, Skilled Personnel for Better Times”, demonstrate that regional development is not limited only to infrastructure or heritage, but also aims at investing in people, skills, and the capacity of institutions to respond to current challenges.
The Chișinău event confirmed that partnerships between the Republic of Moldova and Romania are on a solid and ascending path, strengthened by joint projects and a shared vision of development. Moreover, it was emphasized that these relations are not based only on administrative or economic interests, but on profound ties of history, culture, and identity.
